What? A 40+ year old Black woman with locs can’t like a little Pop?
I love music. All types of music. My Pandora has everything from Elton John and Coldplay Radio to Little Wayne and Future when I’m feeling extra rachet. I’m usually tuned in to the the local pop station, especially with my son in the car, but the latest release by Taylor Swift, “Shake it Off”, spoke to me. Not because they play it a million times throughout the day, but the lyrics, make me chuckle, because I can relate.
‘I stay up too late (because I’m working)’
‘Got nothing in my brain’ (because I SEEM obvious to a lot of the shade)
‘That’s what people say, That’s what people say
I go on too many dates (yep, my dating life)
But I can’t make them stay (insert ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ here)
(I love rumors, by the way…I learn SO much about myself. I’m way more fabulous and interesting than I thought)
Then the bridge is what I, along with many other entrepreneurs tell themselves as soon as our feet hit the floor in the morning. It’s a must –
‘But I keep cruising, Can’t stop, won’t stop moving
It’s like I got this music in my mind (usually the theme from Rocky)’
And no matter what people around you do or say, or don’t do or don’t say, you need to remember to ‘Shake it Off’ so,
‘Baby I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake —Shake it off’
Although it appears I have all the answers, because
‘I never miss a beat, I’m lighting up my feet’
many entrepreneurs are simply just trying to keep up with home, being social and more importantly, our business. Some days, I’m ready to jump off a cliff or at least, stay in bed
‘And that’s what they don’t see, That’s what they don’t see’
Usually unchartered territory – especially as a fashion designer in Cleveland, Ohio, the road for most entrepreneurs is about trial, and error, and error, and more error…
‘I’m dancing on my own, I make the moves as I go, And that’s what they don’t know’
Nope. I don’t have all the answers, I just keep going.
I could go on. But the most important thing I’ve taken from the tune is that….
They are watching
They are taking notes
But one thing you can be sure of is that if you are on the right track and doing business, real business like a true entrepreneur,
‘the haters gonna hate, hate, hate’
So when my phone rings, and Taylor starts singing, in public or otherwise, I ignore the weird looks and stares, I don’t explain, I just answer my phone. Because, just that small dose of encouragement to “Shake it Off” is just what the aspiring entrepreneur needs some days, to ‘keep on moving’. Because Taylor says, ‘it’s gonna be alright’.
And I believe her.
Taylor Swift hits Cleveland next June. If you see a 5’10, black woman with locs, (probably) alone rocking out in the crowd, don’t stare, just join in. Because like music, dancing is another one of my stress relievers.
What songs do you have on your playlist to keep you moving on your climb towards success? Depending on my mood, I have several on deck. Please share.
Until next tune,
